The University of California, San Diego is well known for the beauty of its surroundings.
Now there is another way to appreciate it: at the recently unveiled Brian & Nancy Malk Sunset Overlook on its La Jolla campus.
Completed last month, the overlook features a scenic viewing platform, benches, walking paths and accessible parking along La Jolla Shores Drive.
“UC San Diego is a treasured destination that shines brightly on multiple fronts – from groundbreaking research and education to innovative health care and vibrant arts programs – but it’s also a place of breathtaking natural beauty,” UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla said.
The project was put into motion by Brian and Nancy Malk, local residents who often drive by the site to take in the scenic views.
During their drives past the shore, they noticed that people would gather along the sidewalk and on the backs of trucks to watch the sunset.
Brian later reached out to the university, pitching the project as a space for people of all ages and abilities to “leisurely and safely enjoy the magnificence of the view.”
“UC San Diego’s team enthusiastically embraced the idea,” Brian Malk said. “Making this treasured view accessible for all to enjoy was our mutual goal.”
Construction soon began on the overlook, with the university working with the Malks to plan and design the deck.
The space surrounding the platform and pathway is filled with native, drought-tolerant plants, and signs on-site show respect for the land.
Since UC San Diego and the overlook itself are located on the unceded territory of the Kumeyaay Nation, signage includes a land acknowledgment honoring the region’s original people.
The overlook is now open to the public, welcoming visitors who want to enjoy the views along La Jolla Shores.
“We are grateful to Nancy and Brian Malk for their meaningful gift, which has created a new space for campus and community members to safely and easily enjoy the majestic ocean views that have come to define our university’s spirit,” Khosla said.
