Heading into the 2025 college football season, Arizona State is coming off its first double-digit win season in a decade, with a roster filled with high-impact players hoping to elevate the program to an even higher level. One of those standout players, ASU defensive lineman Clayton Smith, earned a place on Bruce Feldman’s annual college football Freaks List, but it might not be who you’d expect.
Smith was the only Sun Devil listed on his annual Freaks List, coming in at No. 61.
Feldman writes:
The former five-star began his career at Oklahoma. He made six TFLs and 4.5 sacks last year and looks ready to make a bigger impact. The 6-4, 252-pound senior hit 22.1 mph on the GPS with a max acceleration of 8.18. He squatted 565 pounds, benched 335 and cleaned 330. He’s one of a trio of Sun Devils who each could’ve been on the Freaks List. Star wideout Jordyn Tyson, at 6-2, 205, hit 22.8 mph and bench pressed 335 pounds. Linebacker Keyshaun Elliott hit 22.42 mph at 6-2, 234 pounds and power cleaned 360.
Smith, who is entering his fifth collegiate season and third with the Sun Devils, is one of the best athletes on the roster.

“I got faster, I put on weight,” Smith said of landing on Feldman’s list. “Just the work I put in this year, I approached it differently. This being my last year, this is my last shot so I had to give it all I had. Just a testament to the work I put in.”

Smith transferred from Oklahoma after the 2022 season and has had a combined nine sacks in his two seasons with the Sun Devils. His 22.1 mph on the GPS is an incredible feat for his size and comparable to that of receiver Jordyn Tyson’s GPS speed (22.8).
While Smith’s athleticism speaks for itself, he will be aiming for more consistent numbers and increased production heading into the new season.
Smith had 4.5 sacks in 2024, but four of them came in his first four games of the year.
Smith has the chance to put together a career year in 2025, as Arizona State’s defensive line is projected to be one of the team’s biggest strengths heading into the new season.
Smith will be joined by fellow senior edge rusher Elijah O’Neal, who earned four sacks in 2024, and junior C.J. Fite, who totaled two sacks and 30 total tackles in a breakout role last year.
