The San Antonio Spurs have locked in their point guard of the future.
After acquiring All-Star De’Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings during the 2024-25 regular season, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports that the Spurs have awarded the guard with a massive four-year, $229.0 million maximum extension. Fox was headed toward the final year of his deal and would have been among the top free agents in the 2026 class. Instead, he will remain a key veteran piece of the Spurs’ rebuilding effort next to emerging superstar Victor Wembanyama.
Fox appeared in only 17 games for the Spurs last season after coming over from the Kings. He averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, and 4.3 rebounds over that span. The team eventually chose to shut him down for the season after he underwent surgery on his finger.

Not only had young guard Stephon Castle impressed during his rookie campaign, but they lucked into the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. To be sure, Harper and Fox are two very different players, but the incoming rookie has the potential to become a high-caliber starting guard.
