Kenny Ortega Finally Settles the Zac Efron High School Musical Singing Debate

Kenny Ortega finally set the record straight on whether or not Zac Efron sang in High School Musical.

While it's been well known that Drew Seeley lent his voice to Efron's character, Troy Bolton, in the first film, it's been speculated that Efron, 37, didn't do any singing for the franchise's first movie that was released in 2006.

“He sang in the first show,” Ortega, 75, said of Efron while speaking to Entertainment Tonight in a July 29 interview. “The songs were written before Zac got the role. So, although he could sing and he had a lovely voice, it wasn’t the voice that the songs were written for. So, he sang everything and then we dubbed parts of it so that it had greater vocal strength.”

When it came to writing songs for the following High School Musical movies, the director and choreographer explained that the production team took Efron's vocal range into consideration. “But the second and third movie, everything was written for him,” Ortega said. “And that’s important that people know that Zac Efron did sing.”

After he had his big break in High School Musical, Efron continued to show off his vocal range in the movie musicals Hairspray and The Greatest Showman.

Back in 2024, Seeley, 43, reflected on being a small part of the High School Musical franchise.

"I've met Zac a few times at parties and whatnot, but I spent, by far, the least amount of time with Zac compared to any other cast member in High School Musical because I was really only brought in when he was unavailable or not around," he told E! News.

Seeley also reflected on why he wasn't cast to play Troy despite auditioning for the role. "I was a good five, six years older than Vanessa [Hudgens]," he said of the actress who played Troy's love interest, Gabriella Montez. "So in my mind, that had something to do with it. I probably didn't look right with the lineup of everybody else. And also, Zac is a very talented actor and was great in the role. So, I think they did it right."
