Quick, lay out the Chicago Cubs’ starting rotation right now, and then guess what it will be in two weeks! Go!
Yeah, not super easy, given the confluence of trades, injuries, performance issues, innings totals, and role questions. Even with new arrival Mike Soroka starting tonight for the Cubs in his team debut, I don’t think it’s quite as simple as saying he “joins the rotation” together with Colin Rea, Shōta Imanaga, Matthew Boyd, and Cade Horton. That might be true for the next five days, and then, ope, so much can change again.
Ben Brown, by the way, hasn’t pitched since July 27 (when he was quite good), which leaves open so many possibilities. Could he be a piggy-back for Soroka tonight, with both getting a little less exposure to the Reds’ lineup? And if so, does he stick in the bullpen from there, or does he go back to Iowa to keep starting?
© Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn ImagesAlternatively, do the Cubs hold Brown another day and have him start (or follow an opener) tomorrow or Wednesday? And if so, do the Cubs go to a six-man rotation for a little while? Or does Soroka bounce back into the bullpen?
These are all open questions – certainly to us, maybe even to some extent to the Cubs, as they adjust on the fly.
Rehabbing Cubs Starters
Meanwhile, Jameson Taillon (calf) got in his first rehab outing at Iowa yesterday, and it was encouraging in the sense that he was already permitted to go 64 pitches and came out of it healthy. He got knocked around a whole lot, but I can’t think of too much that matters less when you’re talking about an established veteran making his first rehab start and just trying to get in his work.
"You never want get to hit around, but first and foremost it's health and then it's getting back the routine.”Jameson Taillon’s first rehab start didn’t produce great results. But that wasn’t concerning for the veteran pitcher. t.co/itchjvEabR
— Tommy Birch (@TommyBirch) August 4, 2025Jameson Taillon says he’s not sure how long his rehab stint with the @IowaCubs will be. He did say he plans to make at least one more start in St. Paul.
— Tommy Birch (@TommyBirch) August 3, 2025If Taillon is already past 60 pitches, then it’s entirely possible his next rehab outing will be his last, so long as he continues to feel good. That would mean he could return as soon as the road series mid-next-week against the Blue Jays. Otherwise, the Cubs could hold him for the weekend series at home against the Pirates thereafter.
Javier Assad (oblique) started last Wednesday for Iowa and went past 50 pitches, and he’s scheduled to make his next rehab start this Wednesday. The Cubs are clearly playing it very cautiously with Assad’s rehab timeline after the last time – he was almost all the way back from the spring oblique injury when he injured it again. For that reason, even if he approaches 70 pitches this time around, I wouldn’t speculate that his next start would be with the big league team. It could come at that point or after one more rehab outing, but I’m gonna keep my hopes/expectations in check until something is announced.
Summing that all up, you’re looking at a Cubs starting pitching group that currently has six names at the big league level, two MLB arms two-ish (or more) weeks out from a return, and Jordan Wicks just continuing to do his thing in the rotation at Iowa. I expect that the Cubs will try to be creative to get some extra rest for the Imanaga-Boyd-Horton trio over the next month+, but I don’t think we can predict exactly how they’ll do it. So much is dependent on the rehabbers, the match-ups, the improvements, etc.
