COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- The 2025 college football season starts this month and fans finally have a sense of who the top teams in the country will be.
Among them is the defending national champions the Ohio State Buckeyes, who open the season ranked No. 2 in the preseason USA Today coaches rankings. The Scarlet & Gray's week one opponent Texas, who they beat in last season's Cotton Bowl semifinal, comes in at No. 1.
The Buckeyes host the Longhorns in a top-ranked matchup on Aug. 30 at Ohio Stadium. The game will kick-off at noon. Rounding out the top-five is Penn State, Georgia, and Notre Dame.

Ohio State will play three of these teams in the 2025 regular season -- Illinois (Oct. 11), Penn State (Nov. 1), and Michigan (Nov. 29).
This year will mark the second with a 12-team College Football Playoff but the seeding format has adjusted slightly. The five best conference champions will still make the playoff but the four best will no longer automatically earn byes into the quarterfinals.
