For more than 30 years, the La Mesa Police Department has made it a point to set aside one night of the year specifically to connect with residents.
As part of the Aug. 5 National Night Out, LMPD officers will be out in the community interacting with members of the community. The annual event supports community safety and fosters stronger bonds between neighbors and those who protect them.
This year’s event will once again find officers at various locations in the community from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Residents are encouraged to take part in a Neighborhood Watch-hosted event during this time.
La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostathis noted that the annual event helps the community to come together as one.
“National Night Out is a great opportunity for the City of La Mesa to strengthen the relationship between our police department and the community,” Arapostathis said.
“It allows our officers and residents to connect in a positive, informal setting, helping to build trust, open communication, and mutual respect.”
Arapostathis said that La Mesa’s police officers are committed to serving the community with professionalism, compassion, and integrity.
“Their day-to-day work often goes beyond the call of duty, whether it’s helping someone experiencing a crisis, participating in community events, or simply being a consistent and reassuring presence in our neighborhoods,” Arapostathis said.
“Their dedication plays a key role in maintaining the safety and well-being of La Mesa. Officers also take the time to build trust through small, everyday interactions that help strengthen their connection with the people they serve.
“These efforts help build a sense of partnership and mutual respect between the department and the community.”
La Mesa Police Lt. and public information officer Katy Lynch said that the event offers many positives.
“In2015, we changed our format for National Night Out slightly and rather than ask the community to come to us, we meet our community where they are: in their neighborhoods,” Lynch said.
“This allows us to strengthen our relationships with the community but also encourages neighborhoods to come together…. Their events can be a potluck, block party, or a get-together in the backyard. We have 14 neighborhoods registered with us this year.”
As Lynch sees it, National Night Out allows the community to interact with LMPD in a fun and casual environment.
“The relationships we build during this event allow us to further our mission of protecting our community while promoting community involvement,” Lynch said.
“Interacting with kids, letting them sit on a police motorcycle or inside the driver’s seat of a police car, listening to the concerns that people have in their own neighborhoods, answering questions, and letting our community see the big hearts behind the badge — that’s why we do this.”
