Back-to-school in Fort Mill comes with big safety changes

FORT MILL, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- It’s the first day back to school for many South Carolina students Monday, including those in the Fort Mill School District, but along with the excitement, there are also some big changes that families need to know about.

At several Fort Mill schools where traffic is often heavy, crossing guards will now have a new focus: helping students who walk or bike safely across crosswalks.

They will no longer step into traffic to direct vehicles. This change comes after two serious incidents involving guards last school year.

Back in March 2024, Stanley Brucker, a well-known and loved crossing guard at Fort Mill Elementary, was hit and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic. Later that year, in October, another guard was hit outside Fort Mill High School during a crash. She survived, but the incidents deeply affected the community.

For the 2025-2026 school year, the district is shifting how it handles traffic during busy drop-off and pick-up times. Here’s what’s new:

Crossing guards will only assist pedestrians at painted crosswalks "Right-turn only" rules will be in place at several schools to keep traffic flowing and reduce the chance of collisions Fort Mill Police will also increase patrols around school zones to make sure drivers follow the new rules Fort Mill Schools change crossing guard setup: What parents need to know

These changes apply to several schools, including:

Catawba Ridge High Fort Mill Elementary Fort Mill Middle River Trail Elementary Riverview Elementary Tega Cay Elementary

Fort Mill officials said they’re working closely with law enforcement and the South Carolina Department of Transportation to explore long-term safety improvements.
