More than 64,000 pounds of butter have been recalled across the United States and in the Dominican Republic due to an undeclared allergen.
Bunge North America issued a voluntary recall for 1,800 cases of butter on July 14, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The recall was given a Class II risk level on July 30, which means that any use of, or exposure to, the product can “cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” per the FDA.

What product was recalled?
On July 14, Bunge North America recalled 1,800 cases (approximately 64,800 pounds) of NH European Style Butter Blend.
The affected product was packaged in white paperboard cases, with each case containing 36 blocks of butter. The recalled butter will also contain the product code 5023937, UPC 1 00 78684 73961 2 and lot code 5064036503.

Why was the butter recalled?
The butter was recalled due to a mistake in labeling. The product had an undeclared milk allergen and was given a Class II risk level.
The FDA requires companies by law to identify the presence of any of the nine major food allergens in their products. These allergens include eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soybeans, tree nuts and wheat.
Symptoms of food allergies can vary in severity. According to Mayo Clinic, allergens can cause symptoms ranging from hives, facial swelling, nausea, trouble breathing and lightheadedness.
Food allergies can also cause anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, with symptoms that include a swollen throat, constriction of the airways, severe drop in blood pressure, rapid pulse and more.
If gone untreated, anaphylaxis can be fatal.
Where was the butter recalled?
No specific locations have been provided at this time for the affected product.
The FDA’s enforcement report stated that the butter was distributed at 12 centers across the United States as well as one distribution center in the Dominican Republic.
The butter is sold at online retailers like Amazon and Food Service Direct, which is known to sell to restaurants and other retailer across the U.S.

The enforcement report did not provide any specific instructions for the recall and no press release was issued.
The FDA advises that consumers read the recall notice to verify details about the product including the brand name, packaging and codes and follow any specific instructions for the product.
