Main Street bridge delays hit Brockport shops hard, owners adapt

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Businesses in Brockport have been feeling the impact of the Main Street bridge closure. Despite several promised opening dates, the bridge remains closed. It is now set to open sometime during the first week of August. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow visited the area to hear from local businesses.

Thomas Willis, owner of Collectibles and More on Main Street, said he has had to adapt his business model due to the closure.

“We’ve had to come from foot traffic to now online sales, where that’s probably now 80% of our revenue, before it was 100% in store,” said Willis.

Willis mentioned that his sales have suffered, but he has fared better than some other businesses in the area.

“I know three businesses, three friends of businesses, that have closed, either went to the other side of the bridge and opened up shop, or just closed entirely,” said Willis.

The state is fining the contractor working on the bridge, Crane Hogan, each day until it reopens. Willis believes some of that money should go to nearby businesses.

“We should be compensated for staying, and staying open to the town where half of the stuff is abandoned or left,” said Willis.

Willis described the experience as an emotional roller coaster, with several completion dates passing by without the bridge reopening.

“You get a date, you get excited about that date, then that date doesn’t happen,” said Willis. “And then they move it to another day and you get excited about that day. But it eventually gets to a point where I’m not even excited, I’m like yeah they’re not even going to open it.”

Rumors suggest the bridge could open tomorrow, with some residents optimistic after seeing testing. However, the village’s official website only states it will open sometime this week.

News10NBC reached out to the Village of Brockport, the State Department of Transportation, and Crane Hogan for updates but has not heard back.
