DENVER (KDVR) — Gov. Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency for the Elk Creek Fire as Colorado continues to battle wildfires across the state, according to a spokesperson for the Governor's Office.
The Elk Creek Fire is located in Rio Blanco County, just southeast of Meeker.
Evacuation orders have been issued by the Rio Blanco County Sheriff's Office for areas near the fire.
The evacuation order is in place for areas between Mile Marker 11, County Road 57, Miller Creek and Mile Marker 16 on County Road 8 for both the north and south side of the road.
Evacuees can be at the Fairfield Center at 200 Main Street, Meeker, according to a social media post from the sheriff's office.
Evacuations ordered near Carbondale for wildfireThe Rio Blanco County Sheriff's Office assumed responsibility for the fire from the local fire department and requested assistance from the state to combat the fire.
The order provides for additional external resources and state support to more effectively manage and suppress the fire and to protect the values at risk, said the office.
As of Sunday afternoon, the fire has burned over 600 acres on private and state-owned lands.
A Type 3 Incident Team is commanding the fire and is using interagency aviation and ground resources to help, including support from the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, which has been working on the fire since Saturday.
Fire conditions in the area are at near-record levels, and fire risk will continue to be high for the upcoming week.
The emergency declaration sees the State Emergency Operations and Resource Mobilization Plans activated, which will be coordinated by the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management at the State Emergency Operations Center.
Field operations staff will directly support emergency managers.
The Division of Fire Prevention and Control is leading the suppression response.
