The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning, and advised households to keep windows and doors shut, as they prepare for Storm Floris to bring strong winds to the UK.
Winds of up to 90mph are expected in some parts of Scotland, especially in areas with exposed coast, hills and bridges, and the warning is in place from 10am until 10pm.
Meanwhile, northern parts of England could also be impacted by heavy rainfall and “unseasonably” strong gusts in the early hours of Monday morning.

— Met Office (@metoffice) August 3, 2025Ellie Glaisyer, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “The winds will intensify as we go through Monday morning.
“Across the northern part of the country we could widely see gusts of 50 or 60mph inland, potentially up to 70mph at the coast. Across western and northern parts of Scotland, we could see those wind gusts intensifying further. Potentially 85mph, maybe even a little higher on Monday afternoon and evening”.
She added: “As it’s a bank holiday in Scotland, that could cause some impacts, lots of people out on their holidays, lots of people camping, so there could be some disruption”.
The Met Office have warned the storm could lead to some travel disruption and localised flooding if drains become blocked by leaves.
Flying debris could also cause injuries and a danger to life while there could be the risk of power cuts in some areas.
Drivers have been instructed to only drive when it is absolutely necessary and delay their journey if they expect to take an exposed route.
“Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs, could happen. Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible”, the Met Office warning added.
“Some roads and bridges may close. Road, rail, air, and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations possible.”
The UK has previously witnessed stormy conditions in the height of summer. Storm Lilian hit the north of England in August last year, and August 2023 saw strong winds brought by Storm Antoni and Storm Betty.

Temperatures will peak in Hull at 25°C , with Newcastle reaching 24°C, and Birmingham at 23°C.
Glaisyer said: “There are clear skies on Sunday evening [before] we see Storm Floris arriving, bringing some really quite heavy rainfall across parts of northern Ireland and western parts of Scotland as it sweeps in through the early hours of Monday morning.”
Conditions are expected to remain dry but cloudy in Wales and the south of England. After winds peak on Monday morning, there is expected to be some sunshine in northern Ireland and the midlands.
Glaisyer added: “Despite that sunshine, it will definitely feel a little cooler than today across much of the country. Despite temperatures reaching similar values, 23°C or 24°C across the south, with that strong west- northwesterly wind … it will definitely be feeling quite a bit cooler”.
The stormy start to the week will clear up by Tuesday and Wednesday, the Met office said.
Droughts this summer
13.4 million homes fell within an area affected by a hosepipe ban or drought this summer after prolonged hot conditions.
It was the driest spring since 1893 across England, with the average rainfall much lower than usual.
Successive heatwaves and temperatures of over 30°C depleted reservoir stocks, meaning water firms, including Southern Water, Thames Water, and Yorkshire Water, all imposed a ban on using hosepipes.
