Most people dream of winning a lottery jackpot, as scooping up a prize worth millions or even billions of dollars is life-changing.

For this reason, the lottery is the most popular form of gambling in the US, with hundreds of millions of Americans taking part annually.

US lottery ticket sales have steadily increased over the last 10 years, reaching approximately $105.26 billion last year, with experts expecting sales to climb to a whopping $194.14 billion this year.

While the odds of winning the jackpot in a national lottery game like Powerball are roughly one in 292.2 million, the allure of improving one’s chances has led to many theories and strategies.

While there is no foolproof method to guarantee a jackpot win, there are ways to approach the game that could statistically improve your chances.

A new report has revealed a ranking of the “luckiest” stores, cities and towns, and states where Americans are most likely to buy a winning Powerball ticket.

The study, commissioned by Casino.org – a major player in the online gaming industry – reviewed more than 20 years of US lottery data, including over 132,000 winning Mega Millions and Powerball tickets.

From that, they determined the places where the most jackpot-winning tickets were bought.

    AMERICA’S LUCKIEST STORES

The luckiest store in the country when it comes to winning a life-changing jackpot prize is Joe’s Service Center in Altadena, California, according to the Casino.org findings.

The gas station ranked first out of 62,000 stores, with $3.29 billion in winning tickets sold.

Next up was Midway Market & Liquors in Frazier Park, California, with a total lottery jackpot winnings of $1.73 billion.

The Publix supermarket in Neptune, Florida, ranked as third, accumulating a whopping $1.6 billion in total winnings.

KC Mart in Simpsonville, South Carolina, came in fourth with $1.54 billion in lottery jackpot winnings, followed by Publix #0499 in Melbourne Beach, Florida, with $1.5 billion in winnings.

    AMERICA’S LUCKIEST STATES

Depending on which state you call home, you may be more likely to pick up a winning ticket, according to the numbers.

Portland, Oregon, is also a lucky city, with $2.15 in claimed jackpot prizes, followed by Melbourne Beach, Florida, which has seen $2.03 billion in jackpot wins over the past two decades.

Lucky lottery numbers - fact or fiction?

The U.S. Sun spoke exclusively with professor of mathematics at Davidson College, Tim Chartier, who revealed the truth behind lucky numbers.

Scooping up a jackpot prize in a lottery game such as Powerball or Mega Millions involves correctly guessing a series of numbers.

Many players swear by certain numbers, sticking with digits such as birthdays, anniversaries, or ages – but do these numbers statistically carry the luck that players believe they do?

    According to Chartier, they do.

“I think a number is lucky if you have fun playing it and it improves your experience of winning,” he said.

“The big lotteries are, statistically speaking, a chance to dream of being a multi-millionaire or even billionaire. If playing a certain number heightens that experience, then yes!”

However, the lottery expert clarified that aside from the feel-good implications of playing your “lucky numbers,” no number is truly lucky when it comes to the lottery.

“All numbers are equally likely,” said Chartier.

He explained that even though all numbers are equally likely, some may seem to appear more often.

For example, rolling a six-sided die six times does not guarantee that you will roll each number exactly once.

    LUCK OF THE DRAW

While the lottery may seem like a game of luck, it really is a matter of statistics, according to nationally recognized lottery expert Jared James, founder of LottoEdge.

He explained that retailers that gain a “lucky” reputation lure in more players in hopes that “some of that magic will rub off on them.”

“More customers mean more ticket sales, and more sales naturally lead to more winners,” he told The U.S. Sun, noting that these stores become a self-fulfilling prophecy over time.

It is the same reason why bigger metropolitan areas have a greater number of lottery winners than small towns, he explained.

“It’s all about volume,” he said. “The more tickets sold, the more winners that area will have.”

With the Powerball jackpot now standing at over $380 million, as it’s been almost two months since the last jackpot win, players are more eager than ever to have some luck on their side.

However, players should not go out of their way to find a “lucky” retailer, according to James, who noted that each ticket has the same shot at winning, regardless of where it was purchased.

Stores that gain a ‘lucky’ reputation attract more players hoping some of that magic will rub off on them. More customers mean more ticket sales, and more sales naturally lead to more winners. Over time, these stores become a self-fulfilling prophecy.”

There is one instance in which the expert advised giving a second thought to your location: if you live in a state that does not permit jackpot winners to remain anonymous.

“In that case, buying in a nearby state that protects your identity could be worth the drive,” he said.

The U.S. Sun has previously spoken to other lottery experts.

One pro revealed the nine-word rule for winning big every time you play – and the real truth behind lucky numbers.

Plus, an expert shared an easily-followed “rolldown” trick that won a couple millions – it’s all about the time you play.
