Forty years after The Goonies hit the masses, fans are still hoping for a sequel to take shape. And one of its stars was able to shed light on how the potential project is going.
Josh Brolin attended the recent premiere of his next film Weapons and shared details with Entertainment Tonight about how The Goonies 2 is looking — at least from the vantage point of mastermind Steven Spielberg, who conceived the original storyline.
"I think there’s been five scripts so far through the years, and [Spielberg] hasn’t approved anything yet," Brolin, 57, said on the red carpet. "Spielberg is picky, and he has a reason to be because he has great taste."
While the Academy Award-nominated actor sounded positive about the notion of a follow-up to the beloved classic, which was directed by the late Richard Donner, Brolin also voiced his own resignations during his interview with ET.
"I hope it does [happen] because the experience was so great. The movie is received so well, generation after generation, it’s just everything good about it," Brolin said. "The trepidation that I have is that you release something else, that taints that. I don’t want to taint what my memory of it [is]."
Brolin also joked during his interview about the sequel's potential plot, given the four-decade time lapse.
"It’s like, 'Oh, we came out with another,' and then the Goonies grew up, and then they came out with their walkers, and then they fell off a cliff because they couldn’t see very well," he told ET. "Like, what are you going to do? I don’t know. Maybe it could be great."
The original movie, which also starred Sean Astin and Corey Feldman, centered on the eponymous group of kids' search for buried treasure after discovering an ancient map. Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Home Alone and Harry Potter films, wrote the screenplay.
Deadline reported on Feb. 14 that Warner Bros. had tapped Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry) to write the sequel's screenplay, making clear that the project was gaining traction.
