Luka Doncic Inks Massive Three-Year Extension with Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have locked in their young star.

After acquiring Luka Doncic in arguably the NBA’s most stunning trade of all time this past season, the Lakers have extended the superstar guard through 2028. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Doncic has reportedly inked a three-year, $165.0 million max extension, which includes a player option in 2028. The move officially takes Doncic off the market next summer, when he was in line to headline the 2026 free agent class.

The first year of Doncic’s new extension will replace the player option he had for the 2026-27 campaign and bump his salary from $49.0 million to $51.0 million (h/t Bobby Marks).

    Lakers Lock Up Luka Doncic

The contract extension is a massive win for the Los Angeles Lakers, who have now ensured that they have their post-LeBron James building block for the foreseeable future. As for Luka Doncic, while he could have waited to make his decision, signing the deal now puts him in line for a historic payday come the 2027-28 campaign.

If he chooses to forgo his player option for the 2028-29 season and sign a new deal, he will officially reach ten years of service and be eligible for a five-year, $417.0 million contract with Los Angeles. In other words, a deal that comes with an average annual value of $83.0 million. I know, my eyes just popped out of my head, too.

The handful of teams expected to have significant cap space next season are sure to be disappointed, but it’s not as if this news came out of left field. The odds of the Lakers allowing Doncic to reach unrestricted free agency were remarkably low, and Doncic himself had little incentive to pursue another change of scenery. Next season’s free agent class will now be headlined by a 42-year-old LeBron James and a 38-year-old Kevin Durant. If those two end up with their own extensions, eyes will turn toward names like De’Aaron Fox, Trae Young, James Harden, Zach LaVine, and Kristaps Porzingis.
