After several days under a blanket of haze, the Chicago area will see some reprieve Saturday.
Though hazy and smokey skies still linger, the Chicago area will see lighter levels of smoke overhead as air quality begins to improve, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Claudia Olech said.
Temperatures Saturday are below average for the season, sitting between the mid 70s to low 80s.
An air quality alert from the National Weather Service is in effect for Cook County and surrounding counties in Northeastern Illinois through midnight Saturday, according to the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications.
Wildfire smoke rolled in on Thursday, making Chicago’s air quality among the worst in the world, according to IQAir. The NWS issued alerts for both Illinois and Indiana.
“People with respiratory diseases such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor exposure,” the government agency said.
Saturday’s air quality is an improvement from the days prior, but the AQI in the morning was at a level considered unhealthy for some groups.
“Still important to make sure you’re taking those steps to keep yourself safe in case you felt those impacts over the last couple of days,” Olech said.
Chicago area residents should keep air quality in mind moving into next week as heavier smoke that currently sits over Michigan could move into the Chicago area, Olech said.
The temperature is predicted to slowly rise through the weekend and into next week, climbing through the 80s and into the 90s by next weekend.
