Westcliffe’s conservative newspaper closes as editor calls for a revival: “Watching Fox News doesn’t cut it”

A heated newspaper war that politically divided the picturesque town of Westcliffe in south central Colorado has ended.

The Sangre de Cristo Sentinel announced its closure Friday on its website, with the editor blaming “serious, personal health issues.” The Custer County newspaper called itself the “Voice of Conservative Colorado,” even placing a “Trump Won” sign on its lawn. Its editors and reporters were known for wearing sidearms in the newsroom.

The Sentinel stood in contrast to the other newspaper in town, the more traditional Wet Mountain Tribune, which some considered left-leaning. The Tribune has been around for 100 years, while the Sentinel opened 13 years ago, when “four patriots had an idea: publish a conservative, Christian weekly print newspaper covering Custer County,” editor and founder George Gramlich wrote in his goodbye note.

For 13 years, the newspapers and their editors battled it out on editorial pages. Residents of Westcliffe, which has a six-block Main Street and a stunning view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, were loyal to one or the other. Some called the Sentinel “gossip,” and some called the Tribune worse things.

Gramlich thanked the Sentinel’s advertisers, columnists and “computer lady” in his final post. He also encouraged others to pick up where he left off, with perhaps most of the same staff.

“A challenge to our fellow patriots: We are shutting down now but it is very doable to revive the Sentinel or start your own conservative newspaper,” Gramlich wrote. “This little local newspaper has had a huge impact in our area. You can do it, too. Remember, media is where things get done. And the fight is local, Patriots, watching Fox News doesn’t cut it.”

Tribune publisher Jordan Hedberg wrote that the newspaper war had become so intense and personal, that he had received death threats. The newspapers also battled it out in court — including in a federal case over public notices and a defamation case filed by Hedberg.

The Sentinel’s closure is one of several small-town newspaper losses in Colorado during the past several years.
