Neighbors react to city’s order for businesses to close early

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The final day of the Puerto Rican Festival in Rochester is set for Saturday, but city officials have ordered businesses on North Clinton Avenue to close by 4 p.m. due to safety concerns. This decision has sparked mixed reactions among residents and business owners.

“We don’t feel good about that cause when y’all do your festivals and parties they don’t close the street they don’t do it for yall, but they do it for us,” resident Antony Rosa said.

Some neighbors, who preferred not to appear on camera, expressed relief about the early closure, hoping it will reduce violence. The area has experienced violent crimes in the past, but some believe the neighborhood is changing.

“It’s been a while since the violence and the disturbance and all of that I think the neighborhood has changed quite a bit to be honest, so I believe and truly feel it should go on a little bit longer,” another resident said.

City officials said they have held several meetings with neighbors and businesses to discuss concerns. However, the North Clinton Avenue Business Association president disagreed, saying he attempted to contact the city but received no response.

“We need to come to a conclusion where both parties can be in a happy place for both sides, but if you don’t talk, this is what happens when you don’t talk to the merchants, when you don’t communicate, then all these problems arise,” Albert Algarin, the association’s president said.

Algarin mentioned that many merchants might agree to close early but not as early as 4 p.m. He expects most businesses to remain open.

Merchants who do not comply with the city’s order could face misdemeanor charges. Some people plan to walk along North Clinton Avenue from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. tomorrow to show support for local businesses.
