Start List

We have made it to the day seven prelims session, and we are in for a short one this morning.

We only have three 50s and the mixed 4×100 freestyle relays this morning, but even though the events are short, they should still be exciting. This is also the last prelims session for events with a semifinal as tomorrow is the last day of the meet.

We will start the day with the women’s 50 freestyle, where Gretchen Walsh is the top seed. This will be the first time we see her race a freestyle event these championships as she scratched the finals of the women’s 400 freestyle relay and the individual 100 free, but her butterfly has been on point.

Walsh is the top seed followed by Australia’s Meg Harris, who will be swimming her first individual event of the championships, though she split a blistering 51.87 on the 2nd leg of Australia’s 4×100 freestyle relay. This was the 2nd fastest split in the field after Marrit Steenbergen from the Netherlands who touched in 51.64, and will also be competing in the 50 freestyle.

Torri Huske will be the top seed in the first circle seeded heat, coming in at 23.96, just behind Walsh’s 23.91 and Harris’s 23.97. They are the only three athletes entered with times under 24 seconds.

The men’s 50 backstroke will be the 2nd event of the morning, and there are quite a few storylines brewing. World Record holder Kliment Kolesnikov will be swimming his 3rd event of the meet, and he will be looking for his first medal. He finished 6th in the 100 backstroke and he missed the semifinal in the 50 freestyle finishing 18th. He also was a member of the NAB men’s 4×100 freestyle relay which missed the final by finishing 9th. He is the top seed in the event, so we will see if he can earn an individual medal tomorrow.

One of the other things to pay attention to is the American men. Shaine Casas is the 3rd seed and Quintin McCarty is the fourth seed, and this will be the last individual event prelims the coaches can use to choose a men’s medley relay. The two individual 100 backstrokers, Jack Aikins and Tommy Janton, struggled and did not make the semifinals. Casas has swam this week, but he has been off and on, winning the silver medal in the 200 IM and then missing the 100 fly semifinals. This will be the first time we get to see Quintin McCarty this meet, and if he has an exceptional swim, he could find himself on the men’s medley tomorrow.

Pieter Coetze, Thomas Ceccon, and Hubert Kos are the 100 and 200 backstroke medalists that will also appear in the event and could end up on the podium again.

The final individual event of the morning is the women’s 50 breaststroke which will see American Lilly King make her return to the pool for the final individual event of her career. McKenzie Siroky is the other individual American in the event, and she is another athlete who will be swimming her first event of the championships.

Benedetta Pilato is the top seed, and she is joined under 30 seconds by Tang Qianting, Eneli Jefimova, and King. Anna Elendt, the 100 breaststroke champion, is also swimming and is one to watch.

The final event of the morning is the mixed 4×100 freestyle relay, which will be an interesting watch. Due to the lack of entry times in the event, the Netherlands, Australia, the United States, Canada, China, and the NAB team are all in heat two of four along will the Faroe Islands, who find themselves sandwiched right in the middle of these teams in lane 5, Macau, the Maldives, and Armenia

Germany, Hungary, France, Italy and Great Britain are spread out in heats three and four.

The good news is that the teams in heat two will have people around them to race. The bad news is with the United States, France, and Great Britain missing the mixed medley final and so many teams being incredibly fast this meet, nobody is safe. This means that the heat two teams could have to stand there and watch their finals spots disappear, especially for the teams who finish 5th and 6th in the heat.
