The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office assisted in pulling a submerged vehicle from Jordan Lake Friday morning. The sheriff’s office says they were alerted to the vehicle by a fisherman who spotted it with sonar earlier in the week.
The car was located under the U.S. Highway 64 bridge beneath roughly 30 feet of water. Deputies reported no signs of a recent crash and no reports of missing motorists in the area. The identification of the car Friday was executed by both the sheriff’s office and members of the Durham County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team. The divers confirmed the object was a vehicle, later identified as a Nissan Maxima from the early 2000s, and Barnes Towing extracted it. It was unoccupied.
“This isn’t something we see every day, especially in such a popular fishing spot,” said Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson. “We’re grateful to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office for their dive support and to Barnes Towing for helping bring the car safely to shore.”
Investigators from the sheriff’s office are now examining the vehicle to determine how long it has been in the lake, and if it is connected to any previous incidents or reports.
