Anthony Richardson says part of his focus heading into Year 3 with the Indianapolis Colts is on a revamped diet.
That, unfortunately, means no more Skittles.
The former Florida quarterback told ESPN’s Stephen Holder this week that he’s down 10 pounds from his playing weight last year. “I need to be more of a pro when it comes to my eating,” he told ESPN. After making just 15 appearances across his first 2 seasons with the Colts, Richardson enters his third professional season with no guarantee that he’s still part of the organization’s long-term plans, and that has led to some significant offseason changes.
“I had to cut the sweets out, man,” Richardson said, per ESPN. “It’s the candy. I used to be big on Skittles and all that stuff, just eating candy all the time. So, I’ve been just trying to cut out the sugary stuff and hydrate more.”
This offseason, the Colts signed former New York Giants starter Daniel Jones to a 1-year, $14 million contract.
Jones’s arrival served as a bit of a kick in the rear for Richardson. He was taken with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, but after completing just 47.7% of his passes with 8 touchdowns and 12 picks last season, the competition is firmly open for the QB1 job this fall.
According to ESPN, Richardson’s reshaped physique hasn’t been the only noticeable change this offseason. During training camp, his footwork has looked better as well.
“I just feel like the things I was doing last year and the year before, I feel like there was more [to do],” Richardson said,p per ESPN. “All the greats, they always do more. They do more than what other people are expecting them to do.
“After last season, I felt like I needed to do more not only for the team, but for myself. If I want to be a great and I want to be in the Hall of Fame one day, I have to do more. I know I have to go do things that other people won’t do.”
The Colts begin their preseason at Baltimore on Aug. 7. The regular season gets underway on Sept. 7 at home against the Miami Dolphins.
