A child died after getting swept into a storm drain and multiple people, including children, were rescued from floodwaters Thursday as storms lashed the D.C. area with heavy rain.
The 13-year-old boy was playing with a group of kids during flash flooding in Mount Airy, Maryland, when he was swept into a drainage pipe.
About 50 first responders — including a water rescue team — spent about an hour trying to rescue him, Carroll County Fire and EMS Chief Michael Robinson said in a statement. Neighbors tried to help, too.
Soaked children rescued after car swept off the road
In Montgomery County, floodwaters rose quickly, surprising drivers and requiring several rescues. People were left soaked and children were frightened as cars were pushed off the road by a raging torrent of water.
In Potomac, Maryland, a boy sat on top of an SUV that was submerged and lodged between trees, a photo shows. Firefighters used a pole to measure the depth of the water as they walked toward him.
The terrifying experience happened in seconds. As heavy rain pounded the area, a small stream that runs under Bradley Boulevard near Mercy Hollow Lane rose up quickly to become a raging river.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue rushed to the scene and got boats into the water.
One woman with young children was rescued. They were soaked and shivering as they were led to a waiting ambulance.
Another rescue was made just off River Road at Congressional Parkway, where the road was covered with so much water that it became impossible to see the lanes.
It’s happening much too often, one neighbor said.
“This Bradley Boulevard is really horrible,” she said. “Always! Any rain comes, that area is closed.”
In Northwest D.C., a massive tree fell onto busy Connecticut Avenue at Chesapeake Street NW .
Video shows the tree, which stood several stories high, tipping over during heavy rainfall. A Tesla got stuck in the upper branches of the tree, and a woman was rescued.
One witness took a photo of people carrying a woman to safety.
“A big moving box truck came up, and three or four guys jumped out and got her through the window and carried her out,” he said. “We just come together as a community. That’s what we do well in D.C.”
A driver who escaped their car was treated by emergency responders on the scene, D.C. Fire and EMS said.
Another vehicle was damaged, with the back area smashed.
Connecticut Avenue reopened just after 10:30 p.m., but part of the large tree stump was still visible.
Several blocks away, in the 3200 block of Ellicott St NW, another large tree fell onto unoccupied cars, a photo shows.
Flash flood, flood and severe thunderstorm warnings as a cold front pushed in storms, leaving the D.C. area much cooler.
