The Syrian Ministry of Communications and Technology and the Jordanian Telecommunications Regulatory Commission announced the return of Syria to participation in the activities of the GSM Association (GSMA), which is concerned with global mobile telecommunications affairs.
The announcement was made, Wednesday, 30 July, on the sidelines of an official visit by a delegation from the Syrian Ministry of Communications, headed by Minister of Communications Abdul Salam Haykal, to Jordan.
In a statement published on its Facebook page, the Syrian Ministry of Communications said that Syria’s return to the global telecommunications system, after more than ten years of absence, reflects a renewed openness and strengthens regional cooperation in the telecommunications sector.
According to al-Mamlaka TV, citing the joint statement between the two sides, the Syrian delegation’s visit to the commission confirmed Syria’s reintegration into the global telecommunications system, allowing it once again to benefit from all GSMA services, including participation in international conferences, capacity-building programs, and providing Syrian companies with access to the GSMA network and its advantages.
Jordan’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship explained that Syria’s participation in GSMA activities comes in parallel with the lifting of sanctions previously imposed by the U.S. government, after more than a decade of isolation.
During the meeting between the Syrian Ministry of Communications and the Jordanian Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, an official invitation was extended to the Syrian Minister of Communications to participate in the Mobile World Doha Congress, to be held next November in Qatar. The event is considered a key milestone for enhancing cooperation and exchanging expertise at the bilateral and regional levels.
The visit, led by Minister Haykal, included a field tour of Jordanian commission facilities, including a review of frequency monitoring mechanisms and advanced inspection devices used to ensure service quality and compliance with technical and regulatory standards.
Haykal affirmed Syria’s aspiration to benefit from Jordan’s pioneering experience in the telecommunications sector and to leverage Jordanian expertise to develop Syria’s own telecom sector in a way that promotes integration and cooperation between the two countries.
The Jordanian Telecommunications Regulatory Commission stated that the visit aimed to strengthen ties between Jordan and Syria in the telecommunications, information technology, and postal sectors, learn from the commission’s experience in regulating the telecom and postal sectors, and explore future cooperation opportunities.
Jordanian Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship Sami Smeirat said that the meeting aimed to present Jordan’s experience in developing the telecom and digital transformation sectors, examine regulatory mechanisms and legislation governing the sector, and explore areas of cooperation and knowledge exchange between the two countries.
Smeirat emphasized the importance of ongoing coordination with the Syrian side and enhancing the partnership between regulatory bodies and operating companies in both countries, which would contribute to improving services and expanding opportunities for regional cooperation in the digital field.
For his part, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Jordanian Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Bassam al-Sarhan praised the importance of sharing specialized knowledge and experiences in the telecommunications sector, which is a key pillar in supporting economic development and digital transformation.
Al-Sarhan affirmed the commission’s constant readiness to cooperate with the Syrian side and to provide Jordan’s accumulated expertise in regulating and overseeing the sector. This would enable Syria to enhance its telecommunications infrastructure and modernize it to meet global technical standards. He noted that the Jordanian and Syrian sides will soon prepare to sign a memorandum of understanding, facilitating technical and knowledge exchange on regulatory matters and unifying joint efforts in international forums.
The two sides also discussed investment opportunities in the Syrian market, emphasizing the importance of leveraging the promising investment environment there.
