Surprise! The Diamondbacks Are Keeping Prices High For Now

To the extent the Cubs want Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly as their second starting pitcher addition at this deadline, they might have to take it right up to the final moments at 5pm CT.

Bruce Levine hears the Diamondbacks are keeping their asks extremely high, as of this morning:

The Diamondbacks have been asking for "an arm and a leg" in trade talks for Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen, @MLBBruceLevine told @DavidHaugh, but those prices could go down closer to the 5 p.m. deadline. pic.twitter.com/nOjl6lkVJo

Most of the starting pitcher market hasn’t moved yet, so I can understand the Diamondbacks holding for a bit longer (look at what the Guardians got for Shane Bieber by shooting high!).

Frankly, from the Cubs’ perspective, I’m not sure that bothers them too much.

For one thing, they already have Mike Soroka in the bag as protection against getting shutout today. For another thing, the Cubs might prefer to try, try, try all day to get one of the controllable front-half starter types like MacKenzie Gore, Joe Ryan, or Edward Cabrera. So if the DBacks are forcing teams to wait by asking unrealistic prices, then I expect the Cubs are fine waiting.
