The 2026 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup will head to a new part of the world. The global governing body has selected Baku, Azerbaijan; Tashkent, Uzbekistan; and Astana, Kazakhstan as the hosts according to the Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan. The event is being dubbed the “Silk Road Swimming World Cup.”
This will be the tour’s first trip to the Caspian region, marking the 24th, 25th, and 26th countries to host since the series was launched in 1988.
The selection fits in with World Aquatics’ new methodology that selects three hosts within a tight region for the annual autumnal series. The 2025 tour will be hosted in the United States and Canada, while the 2024 tour was hosted in China, South Korea, and Singapore.
This will be the highest-profile aquatics event hosted by any of the three countries, though two of them have hosted major events in the past. Baku hosted the 2015 European Games, which doubled as the 2015 European Junior Swimming Championships,
The region has been working to increase its international profile through sports. Kazakhstan will host the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships in 2027, the first time the event has been held in Central Asia. Kazakhstan also bid for the 2028 Olympic Games.
The three hosts will be a stark contrast to 2025. According World Bank data, both Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan rank outside of the world’s top 100 in median household income. The three countries rank 154th (Azerbaijan), 121st (Uzbekistan), and 88th (Kazakhstan) among 180 countries listed in Transparency International’s global Corruption Perceptions Index. Among the three, only Kazakhstan’s score is trending upward.
The three countries have approximately 60 million people between them, and all three are part of the Chinese “Belt and Road” project that was launched by China in 2013 in part to provide the country a strategic land route for trade through Central Asia.
The World Cup in 2024 offered $1,196,000 in prize money.
