Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi did not swim the prelims of the 200 breast on Thursday morning in Singapore. Martinenghi was the #16 seed in the event coming into the meet, entered with his best time of 2:10.00 from June of this year. It took a 2:11.34 to make advance to the semifinals of the World Championships tonight.

Martinenghi already has two events under his belt at this meet so far. He won a silver medal in the 100 breast in a season-best time of 58.58, and he finished 13th in the 50 breast with a 27.03. To advance to the final of the 50, it took a 26.93.

A star in the 100 breast, Martinenghi was the Olympic champion in that event in Paris last summer, surging to a narrow victory in 59.03. He did not race the 200 breast in Paris.

The 200 breast today would have been his last event in Singapore, meaning his individual campaign at the World Championships has come to a close.

It is not known for sure why he did not swim in the prelims of the event, but Martinenghi revealed after the 100 breast final that he had been up the whole night prior vomiting and unable to sleep.
