A.Q. Shipley is coming back to the Arizona Cardinals, but as a broadcaster. It was announced Monday that Shipley will be replacing Ron Wolfey as the color analyst for the team.
The former starting center will be joining Dave Pasch, who serves as the play-by-play commentator for the Cardinals.
Shipley is no stranger when it comes to being an analyst. He’s been breaking down film on The Pat McAfee Show, whose host was one of his former teammates on the Indianapolis Colts.
“I’ve been doing this on the McAfee Show for a couple of years in a different kind of role but still an analyst role where I’m breaking things down and watching a lot of film. I think that’s obviously helped me in my career and play long as I did,” Shipley said on Bickley & Marotta Tuesday morning.
“I’ve been fortunate to be able to do this for a little bit, but now it’s just going to be in a different role, calling it live.”
Shipley admitted that it will be hard to replace Wolfey’s iconic voice.
Shipley believes that he can add his recent playing experience to the booth and looks up to players-turned-broadcasters like Greg Olsen and Tony Romo for his new position.
“I think there’s a brilliant combination, and I think I can bring that same aspect,” Shipley said. “I know what all of these guys are running, I can kind of read, kind of see and kind of look at it from a perspective. A lot of times if you do your homework and look at things beforehand, I can sit and watch a game similarly.”
A.Q. Shipley has big expectations for the Arizona Cardinals
Shipley was not afraid to hold back on how the Cardinals should perform this season as training camp continues.
Being a former center, he is most excited to watch the offensive line.
“I’ve been a big fan of what they’ve been able to do, and I think that’s the strength of their group. I think they’ve been able to prove that they have grown and gotten a lot of better. I love what they’ve been able to do,” Shipley said.
Shipley’s last year with the Cardinals was Murray’s first season in 2019. With the time gone by, Shipley talked highly of his former teammate, saying he has come a long way from his rookie year.
“The first time I watched him step on the field and looked at him … the first thing I noticed was his size,” Shipley said. “In year one, it’s obviously going to be a challenge for any quarterback. He handled it well, got better and had a good amount of success in his rookie year and he’s only gotten better and better. I think this is the year he takes that big step.”
Cardinals continue training camp on Friday in preparation for their first preseason game on Aug. 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
