A rare in-division trade in the NL Central, with the Reds looking to supplement their competitive run (we focus so much on the Brewers, but the Reds are right in the Wild Card race) by improving at third base.
The question is, how much does Ke’Bryan Hayes actually do that:
BREAKING: The Cincinnati Reds are acquiring third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources tell ESPN. Hayes is among the best defensive players in baseball and has five years of club control beyond this season.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 30, 2025We discussed Hayes pretty extensively around here as rumors kept connecting him to the Cubs (which felt a bit like the Pirates trying to game out other suitors at the time, and sure looks like it now). The short version is that his glove remains elite, but he hasn’t hit in a very long time. Having five years of “club control” in that case is not necessarily a selling point.
If the Reds are taking on all of Hayes’ deal, I would not expect them to have given up too much in this trade.
UPDATE: Jeff Passan has the return:
Full trade, per ESPN sources:Cincinnati receives: 3B Ke'Bryan HayesPittsburgh receives: SS prospect Sammy Stafura and RP Taylor Rogers
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) July 30, 2025Sure enough, it’s a modest return. Rogers is pitching reasonably well this year, but is clearly being included as a salary offset. I wonder if the Pirates will try to trade him now for a little bit of value.
As for Stafura, he’s a top-15 prospect in the Reds’ system after being their second rounder in 2023, and he’s hitting well at Low-A. But he’s 20 and is repeating the level, so I don’t know if there are concerns there about his offense not yet translating at the higher levels. He’s got nearly 800 PAs at Low-A with good numbers … so something doesn’t track.
