It’s a big-name, impact player whom everyone is watching closely in part because he took a pitch off the finger and is DH’ing today, so pretty much any update on Eugenio Suarez is going to strike me as potentially important.
This one, from Mark Feinsand, is not necessarily saying a whole lot, but I still figured you’d want to see:
“The market for Eugenio Suárez is beginning to shape up with less than 30 hours until the Trade Deadline. Per sources, the Mariners, Cubs, Tigers and Phillies are considered the primary teams in the race for the All-Star third baseman.”
Being one of four “primary teams” on a trade piece is not a ton to go on, but it does suggest that the feeling out there is still that the Cubs are involved. Bruce Levine just now reports that the Cubs are still doing “due diligence” on Suarez.
For me, Suarez was one of the best-fitting trade pieces for the Cubs … until that pitch hit his finger. I know the X-rays were negative and I know all the other tests were clear and I know he’s in the lineup today. But he is very notably not playing in the field when the pitch seemed to hit him right on his right index finger. I’d like to see the guy make pain-free, accurate throws from third base before advocating for the Cubs to give up the biggest trade haul for a rental position player in recent memory.
But I won’t be getting that data point today and neither will the Cubs. They can watch him bat, and we’ll see what’s what from there.
