Manchester United open talks for Benjamin Sesko as Newcastle fear transfer will be hijacked

Manchester United have opened talks for Benjamin Sesko after sending a delegation to Germany to meet with RB Leipzig officials, talkSPORT understands.

Chief negotiator Matt Hargreaves arrived a few days ago with United aware they have to move fast with Newcastle also pushing for Sesko’s signature.

Talks are also ongoing on the player side now, as United step up their pursuit of a new No.9.

Leipzig quoted Arsenal a price in excess of €80m for Sesko earlier in the window with sporting director Andrea Berta unable to drive the price down.

But both Newcastle and Manchester United believe a transfer could be possible for closer to €70m.

Having already whiffed on a number of their key targets this window, the Magpies are understood to be fearful yet another deal could be hijacked.

Sesko is one of two active options for Manchester United along with Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, though talkSPORT understands Ruben Amorim would prefer the latter.

Villa don’t wish to sell the England striker, but United may still persist with talks and even test that resolve with a bid.

They have not yet ruled out making a formal offer, albeit one below Villa’s £60m valuation.

There remains internal debate at United as to whether to opt for proven Premier League experience or a younger No.9 with a high ceiling such as Sesko.

United made an approach to Sesko last summer as well along with Arsenal and Chelsea, but he chose to stay another year at Leipzig.

Manchester United have also held some talks with Dortmund, who are deciding whether to make a bid to resign Jadon Sancho.

Sancho is now available for around £17m, but agreeing terms with the player will prove costly for any suitor.

Juventus are also in talks with the Manchester United winger.
