Walton Goggins has built a career of being more than meets the eye. Whether it's a cop on The Shield, a criminal on Justified or a scene-stealing televangelist on The Righteous Gemstones, the 53-year-old always has a way of bringing surprising depth to every on-screen appearance.
That's why he feels it's only natural to partner with Frito-Lay and PepsiCo for a new ad campaign announcing the latest flavor of Doritos: Golden Sriracha. The company touts the new taste brings a "safe-for-work" level of spice, along with a surprising amount of sweetness. And the White Lotus star shows he's a far cry from the R-rated nature of HBO by appearing in a just-released short film, “A Spicy, but Not Too Spicy Plumber,” as an adult film setting gets visited by a handyman who is perhaps a bit too focused on his work.

"I read it for the first time, and I couldn't believe what I was reading," Goggins tells Parade in an exclusive interview. "It was so bold. I called my wife, and I told her about it, and the next thing I told her was, 'I'm doing this.' Who hasn't been eating Doritos their entire childhood? These bags and these flavors have been an iconic part of our lives. And these won't disappoint. They didn't disappoint me. This is just such a fun, cool way of telling that story and doing it in a way that's believable."
Goggins, of course, is riding quite the high to close out what ended up being a very eventful July. Just a couple of weeks ago, he was nominated for an Emmy for his role as the mysteriously broken Rick Hatchett in Season 3 of the hit Mike White series. This marks the third time Goggins has been honored with a nomination. But this one feels particularly special to him, considering his connection to Thailand, which he visited not only to film The White Lotus, but also after his first wife died by suicide in 2004.
"It's emotionally overwhelming," Goggins says about the nomination. "The experience was so deeply personal to me. I felt the message that Mike was using this experience to relate to this audience was so visceral and something that I have experienced in my own life [that] I've talked about that in the press quite a bit over the last year. And now to be standing here in this room with all of these creatives, a lot of them being friends of mine, and then all of the people on all of these shows. And to be standing with a number of my cast members and Mike and so many members of the crew, it's another circle being completed."

Despite putting in a large amount of very well-respected roles up to this point, Goggins's work on The White Lotus has elevated him to a brand-new level in his career. But, true to a man who's been putting in his dues with the industry since he was 19, he's incredibly humble about the recent accolades.
"You can't go wrong if you show up with your heart, and you show up with gratitude and you show up with humility," he reasons. "I'm just grateful to be invited to the party. And I'm going to bring to it everything that I brought to that role, that I brought to every single day I've ever shown up for work. Look, man, none of this is guaranteed, none of it. And the story of Rick talks about that. Just be grateful and look around and realize how beautiful life is in any given moment."
Goggins' first Emmy nod came from another show that considerably raised his profile: Justified. The FX series, which had him starring opposite Timothy Olyphant as local baddie Boyd Crowder, recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of the premiere, as well as the 10th anniversary of the finale. And Goggins, much like he does with every character he personifies, found something to relate to with Boyd, going back to growing up in Alabama, dreaming of making something of himself.

"I don't even believe in playing characters. But every role or every opportunity to tell a story that I've had, however big or however small, they are still right right here," he says, gesturing to his heart. "They're all still very, very, very, very close to me. And Boyd being kind of a standout among many standouts for me personally."
Despite dying in the show's series finale, Goggins returned for an appearance in the spinoff Justified: City Primeval in 2023. And it was a cameo that he nearly turned down initially.
"The opportunity to go back and to surprise people and show up in that next season, I didn't want to," he admits. "I didn't know how I would feel about it. Because I can't be too close to him. I gotta let him go. But the very first day of filming and putting those clothes back on, that jumpsuit, and finding his stride and his cadence and what he was saying and the way he communicates to people, oh, man, it was like just sitting with an old friend. I didn't want those two days to end."
It seems, evidently, that Walton Goggins has nothing but sweet flavors on the tongue when talking about the road that led him to become such a celebrated actor today.
