The Public Prosecution office in the Red Sea decided to refer the detained captain of the Sindbad tourist submarine, which sank in Hurghada waters at the end of March, claiming the lives of six Russian tourists and injuring 23 others, to the Misdemeanor Court pending trial.
This came days after the Public Prosecution received a technical report prepared by a specialized engineering committee on the circumstances of the accident.
The prosecution charged the captain, Ahmed Seif al-Nasr, with manslaughter and negligence. It also decided to refer the submarine engineer, who fled, to trial.
The court set Wednesday’s session for the trial of the defendants before the Hurghada Misdemeanor Court.
The statements of the captain of the sunken Hurghada submarine, during the Red Sea Prosecution’s investigations, revealed that water entered the submarine before it was moved from the offshore platform or put into operation.
He added that the passengers were entering the submarine and that he rescued and evacuated a large number of them, and that he was the last to emerge after it was submerged and visibility was lost.
The Red Sea Governorate Operations Center had received a report that a tourist submarine had sunk in its designated dock in front of a famous hotel in Hurghada.
The submarine was carrying 50 passengers of various nationalities.
