Anthony Joshua’s trainer isn’t amused over claims his charge could face Jake Paul.
Speculation continues to grow over a controversial potential bout between two-time heavyweight world champion Joshua and YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul.
Paul first called out Joshua and the pair discussed a stunning showdown over private messages.
The American star has requested the bout take place until 2026, but formal talks have yet to take place over the blockbuster commercial bout.
Joshua hasn’t fought since being brutally crushed by Daniel Dubois in September last year, but is expected to make a comeback in 2025 having recovered from elbow surgery.
Davison, AJ’s current coach, has explained to BoxingScene why he doesn’t want to see Paul considered upon the former Olympic champion’s return.
Davison said: “I don’t like all that. First and foremost, how can people even talk about that? Two, where’s the safety aspect in boxing? Do you know what I mean? That is a serious risk with something going wrong.
“Unfortunately, it might take something like that for people to be like, ‘Hold on, we’ve got to reconfigure this’. But somebody would pass it; somebody would allow it; somebody would sanction it.”
Despite his comeback now expected to be towards the end of 2025, Davison explained that Joshua has remained active in the gym throughout his recovery.
He said: “He’s the ultimate professional; he’s always keen on making sure that he’s right; the body’s right; the mind’s right and all the rest of it.
“He’s had a couple of niggles and obviously had a tough fight there and to be honest with you, he’s had years of big fights in the heavyweight division and sometimes the rest will do you good as well.
“It’s good to see that [Joshua has been relaxing abroad, but] in that time he’ll always be looking after himself but he’s also enjoying himself as well.”
Dubois became the IBF heavyweight world champion when he defeated JoshuaMark Robinson/MatchroomWhen Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, spoke out on a potential fight between Paul and his fighter he issued a firm warning to the American.
During an interview with The Stomping Ground, Hearn said: “If you want to do the biggest numbers in the sport we’ll make it happen but please I just want you to like be careful what you wish for.”
Is Anthony Joshua vs Jake Paul likely to happen?
Paul has certainly made a name for himself since making his debut on the professional boxing scene in 2020, albeit controversially.
The peak of that controversy being when he fought and beat heavyweight legend Mike Tyson in November 2024, which left fans upset after Tyson was just a shadow of the fighter he once was.
In terms of the 28-year-old being a legitimate opponent for Joshua, it’s not completely out of the question.
GettyPaul beat his toughest opponent to date Chavez Jr via unanimous decision[/caption]Paul actually had a brief spell as No.14 on the WBA cruiserweight rankings following his win against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in June, although his rank was disputed and ultimately revoked.
While Paul’s dreams of becoming a world champion at cruiserweight one day seem further out of reach, we could see him get his big payday to face Joshua when the 35-year-old returns.
