Spirit Airlines confirms huge November 1 change after cash-strapped company forced to cull flights

SPIRIT Airlines has confirmed a major change after the cash-strapped airline was forced to make a series of brutal cuts.

The airline has made headlines in recent years as it battles with its finances, despite being one of the most famous jet companies in America.

The company hasn’t turned a profit since 2019 – almost six years ago – and filed for Chapter 11 in November 2024.

It was the first airline to do so since American Airlines in 2013.

However, the airline has now been forced to make additional cuts as it continues to battle with its economic woes.

A staggering 270 pilots will be furloughed this fall, in the company’s third cull this year.

The cut comes as the rand drastically reduces its capacity by 1 million seats in May and Jne 2025.

That’s a 24 per cent decrease from last year.

The company previously told Forbes that the cuts were “necessary steps to ensure we operate as efficiently as possible as part of our efforts to return to profitability”.

The airline added that the furloughs will “better align staffing with our flight schedule”.

Spirit isn’t the only airline to be battling with falling sales in recent years.

All of the major US airlines confirmed in their second-quarter earning calls that demand for main cabin bookings has softened.

United Airlines chief commercial officer Andrew Nocella said that his company’s revenues in the “economy cabin” were “negative”, although demand had risen in the premium cabin.

The news comes after Spirit Airlines made headlines for its controversial dress code.

Tanasia Grayer said she was banned from travelling on the airline because she was wearing shorts.

She claims that she even offered to cover them up with a hot, pink bathrobe but was still denied boarding.

The airline had changed its dress code, saying those without “adequate covering” would be banned from entering the plane.
