TEMPE — Wide receiver Jordyn Tyson is one of four returning players taking on more of a leadership role as new members of Arizona State’s Tillman Leadership Council in 2025.
The new role for Tyson comes after he led the nation in receiving over his final eight games prior to a collarbone injury that sidelined him for the postseason.
“They look at me as a leader and I need to be more vocal as a leader,” Tyson said in March before spring camp opened. “I feel like I’ve kind of set the example, but being more vocal about it.”
The council seems to be a staple of the locker room for the foreseeable future after coach Kenny Dillingham implemented the idea last summer.

Leadership is an especially hot topic in the wide receiver room, as Tyson’s position coach and former Super Bowl MVP Hines Ward was made associate head coach so players from any position would feel more comfortable approaching him with questions.
“A player can come to me all they want and they can ask me for leadership advice, but I’ll never know the answers that Hines knows because he was in their exact same shoes as a player leader,” Dillingham said Tuesday. “I’ve never been a player leader. I’ve only been a coach leader, which are different roles.
“Giving him that title was just for me to say, ‘Guys, I don’t care (what position you are), if you have a question about how to lead, about how to create standards, how to be successful, he can help you.'”
Offensive lineman Josh Atkins, linebacker Jordan Crook and cornerback Keith Abney II were the other newcomers to this year’s council.
The coach said he’s seen evidence of how beneficial it can be, not just for the players being led, but also for the leaders themselves.
“You look at where he is now, is (second-year council member and defensive end) Clayton Smith 20 pounds heavier, is he a mature human being … would he have grown up and been the Clayton Smith of today if his teammates didn’t vote him on that, if we didn’t challenge him to be a better leader? I don’t know,” Dillingham said. “I really don’t know, but he is.
“I’m really pleased with what the leadership council is and who they voted on, I think it’s a reflection of our team.”
Who votes on Arizona State’s Tillman Leadership Council and what does it do?
Players are elected to the council by their voting peers.
“I do not change the votes, I refuse to,” Dillingham said. “I don’t care if there’s somebody that I think shouldn’t be on it, or if there’s somebody not on it that I think should be on it. I don’t change the votes.”
The council regularly meets with Dillingham and the other coaches, helping to provide locker room perspective as well as determine practice structures and other aspects of the program’s operations.
Dillingham gave an example last season of a player who was causing problems off the field. The council stepped in, said they would get the player in line and it wasn’t an issue the rest of the season.
It was created as a nod to Pat Tillman’s legacy of leadership, which it denoted with a jersey patch of Tillman’s silhouette and signature No. 42.
It gave the opportunity for more leadership roles as opposed to a more traditional select few. Dillingham has said it can fluctuate in size year to year but has included around a dozen players in both iterations to this point.
Being on the council in its second season comes with an added perk of custom tailored suits that first appeared at Big 12 Media Days in Frisco.
