Culture change is here.
Just ask Chicago Bears wide receiver DJ Moore.
During his conversation shared with @brgridiron on Twitter/X, Bears wideout DJ Moore shared an inside look at what it is like to practice for new Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson. Moore’s answer is telling, informative, and even a bit entertaining as he paints a picture of the scene:
DJ Moore thinks Ben Johnson has already started to change the culture in Chicago only a week into camp pic.twitter.com/9vsrEhiXhv
— B/R Gridiron (@brgridiron) July 29, 2025Q: New regime here in town for you. Change of scenery with the crew in here. How has it felt so far through the early portion of training camp with Ben Johnson?
A: Uncomfortable. It’s been the main thing. Just them trying to change the culture around here and they’ve done it fast. And you can tell how we practice and go about our business.
Q: What about it has changed so much, in terms of how you practice? What is the thing that jumps out to you right away?
A: The intensity. If you mess up, you’re getting out of there. You get one chance. If you’re a double-offender, then you’re not going to be in on that play for the rest of camp it feels like.”
For as much as former Bears Head Coach Matt Eberflus used the word “accountability” in press conferences, it never felt like it showed up in practices or in games. Meanwhile, you have Ben Johnson on the other side of the coin, giving players one chance to make right on a wrong before moving on to another player who gets a shot at the task. Johnson might quibble with terminiology when it came to pulling the starters during the first week of camp, but that is a perfect representation of what DJ Moore is discussing in the video above. This is what it looks like when you set the tone, and players are taking notice.
Ben Johnson has made DJ Moore and his Bears teammates “uncomfortable” at training camp
There have been two constants thus far in the Ben Johnson era. First, it is the attention to detail the Bears’ head coach brings to the table on a day-to-day basis. This is something that has been driven home by the coach since the start of the offseason training program. And something Patrick wrote about on the topic back in June truly puts it into perspective. Which brings us to the word uncomfortable, which I think would be accurately used to describe how the first-year Bears head coach is making his players feel. That the uncomfortable vibe is a good thing might make folks raise an eyebrow, but let me explain.
Chicago Bears WR DJ Moore vs. the Detroit Lions. | © Lon Horwedel-Imagn ImagesWhen meeting with the media in March, Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson said the quiet part loud when he said the difficulty level at Halas Hall was about to get turned up. Hearing DJ Moore discuss how things are uncomfortable a Halas Hall made me think about what Johnson had to say in March:
“It shouldn’t be easy. The spring should be hard. Training camp should be hard. Anything worth doing is hard. So, it’s going to take a lot of work, it’s going to take a lot of effort. In particular, Year 1, we should not be comfortable as we’re coming into the spring time. We’re going to load these guys up. We’re going to see what they can handle. We’re going to fail. And that’s OK. That’s part of how you learn, how you grow, and you get better. And so, we’re going to encourage that as a coaching staff. Nothing about this is about making it easier. It’s going to be fun.”
When DJ Moore talks about being uncomfortable, just know that it is a good thing. This means that Ben Johnson’s plans from March are playing out according to plan. Whether that turns into wins come September is something we will learn in due time. In the meantime, I like knowing that the drive to create culture change is going beyond lip service. Now, win some darn football games.
