ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A woman was paralyzed after being hit by a car while helping someone on the side of the road in Webster. Unable to talk, she communicated with her eyes to let doctors know when she was ready to be taken off life support.
Haley McLaughlin was hit by a car at the beginning of July. McLaughlin’s boyfriend said they were driving down Plank Road when they stopped to help a man who hit a deer. She helped the man move his fallen car parts to the side of the road, that’s when she was struck. Doctors told her she would be on life support for the rest of her life, and likely not survive the surgeries she would need to recover.
When her boyfriend realized she could hear and understand him, he asked her to answer questions by moving her gaze towards the door and away. That’s how she confirmed she wanted to donate her organs and be taken off life support.
“She was like a sister to me. I could tell her anything. She could tell me anything,” said Ashley Baker, a close friend of McLaughlin. “And just every day she would text me, ‘Good morning beautiful’ or ‘goodnight.’ She would send me sunsets, pictures of sunsets. She would stop randomly over to see us,” said Baker.
McLaughlin was known for hunting for giveaway items on Facebook Marketplace to deliver them to moms in need in her area. She’d search for formula and diapers, and collect them to hand out later.
She spent a total of 13 days on life support. After she died, her organs saved eight people.
“She would always help everyone. She didn’t have much, but she would help as much as she could. She would give her shirt off her back to someone if they needed it,” Baker said.
Haley’s decision gave her family and friends the chance to say goodbye to her.
“I told her how much I loved her, and I would do my best to take care of Matt and Cece. And I would always be here for her and please, you know, give us a sign,” her close friend Rheda Osceola said.
McLaughlin’s friends said her heart was the first organ donated. She was taken off life support on July 18. They also said there won’t be a funeral. Instead, they’ll hold a “celebration of life” ceremony for her.
A GoFundMe has been set up for Haley’s burial services and to support her 3-year-old daughter’s future.
