CUBS LINEUP — Well, yesterday was not a great day all around. And while the Cubs’ loss to the Brewers was just one small part of that, it definitely didn’t help. Let’s see if the following Cubs lineup (and Colin Rea) has more success than Matthew Boyd and the team did yesterday.
Win, and we’re tied for first place again. Lose, and you’re 2.0 games back.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Michael Busch, 1B Kyle Tucker, RF Seiya Suzuki, DH Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Nico Hoerner, 2B Ian Happ, LF Dansby Swanson, SS Reese McGuire, C Matt Shaw, 3BCarson Kelly is out of the Cubs lineup tonight, which means there’s a shakeup in the middle. With Reese McGuire coming in, but batting eighth, Nico Hoerner jumps up to the fifth spot in the lineup, separating Pete Crow-Armstrong and Ian Happ.
That gives the Cubs a pretty hefty group of lefties (Busch, Tucker, PCA, Happ, McGuire) against Preister, who has had more trouble with lefties (.357 wOBA) than righties (.305 wOBA) for his career.
The opposite is true this season, though, so who knows. Either way, with a night game tonight and a day game tomorrow, McGuire was coming in for one of these matchups either way. And I like Carson Kelly’s chances vs Freddy Peralta (tomorrow) better than McGuire’s.
Reaaaaaaally hope the Cubs can even the series tonight. Don’t like the idea of going down 2.0 games before facing Peralta in Milwaukee.
Milwaukee Brewers Lineup:
Sal Frelick, RF Jackson Chourio, CF William Contreras, C Christian Yelich, DH Andrew “Babe Ruth” Vaugh, 1B Isaac Collins, LF Brice Turang, 2B Anthony Seigler, 3B Joey Ortiz, SSPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Colin Rea, RHP
Colin Rea had put four really solid starts between himself and his last clunker, before laying an egg against the Royals last week: 5.0 IP, 6H, 6R, 5ER (3 HR), 0BB, 3K. As I recall, he was roughed up by a trio of two-run home runs, which was troubling because the Royals (.389 SLG vs RHP) are not a mashing team. Incidentally, the Brewers (.389 SLG) have the same SLG% versus righties, though that comes with a far better wRC+ (101 for the Brewers vs 88 for the Royals).
Rea has been more good than bad for the Cubs this year, but if there were ever a time to give us his best, this is pretty darn close to it.
Milwaukee Brewers: Quinn Priester, RHP
On April 7, in an act of rotation desperation that seems trite now, the Brewers traded a haul to the Red Sox for Quinn Priester. And while their rotation has healed up AND blossomed all around him, Priester has rewarded the Brewers with a 3.28 ERA over 101.2 IP.
And although he’s not doing it in a sexy way (20.5 K%, 8.1 BB%), he is generating a metric TON of groundballs 57.5% and thus staying off the barrel (7.0%).
So keep an eye out for some inning-ending double-plays tonight. Might be smart to get the boys running if they reach first base.
