A BELOVED diner is swooping in to rescue Oregon breakfast fans after the sudden collapse of a popular chain.
Shari’s, famed for its late-night grub and signature pies, abruptly shuttered all the state’s locations last October after racking up outstanding debts with the Oregon Lottery.
The closures left dozens of the chain’s distinctive hexagonal buildings sitting empty — until now.
Elmer’s Restaurants has confirmed it will take over several of those sites, with new diners opening near Portland International Airport, in Hillsboro, Tualatin, and Bend.
According to the company’s website, all the new spots will be housed in former Shari’s locations, keeping the familiar look alive but with a new twist on the menu.
While Oregon’s Shari’s fans were left in the lurch, the chain’s Washington restaurants remain open.

With more than 400 stores across the US, Kum & Go is being rebranded under new ownership.
The company confirmed that renaming will begin in Iowa, with plans to potentially expand the change to other states.
The new banner will be “Maverik,” according to the Utah-based Maverik convenience store chain, which purchased Kum & Go in April 2023.
An email sent to Kum & Go rewards members on July 15 reassured customers that aside from the name change, little would be different.
It said: “Our commitment to our members and our communities remains as strong as ever.
“The familiar faces you’ve relied on will still be here to serve you.”
The official name change was first announced in November 2024, and while the goal is to eventually convert all Kum & Go stores, the company has not shared a firm schedule.
In a statement to the Des Moines Register, Maverik confirmed it is “in the process of rebranding Kum & Go stores, with the intent to unify our entire combined footprint under the Maverik brand.”
It added: “…We are taking a thoughtful, market-by-market approach to ensure the best customer experience before confirming each state’s rebrand.
“Our focus is delivering a consistently elevated c-store experience—across fuel, rewards, foodservice, and inside-store offerings.
“As we solidify our plans in each state, we will share those updates with you.”
