Evander Holyfield’s son to continue comeback trail with next fight booked after open heart surgery

Evan Holyfield, son of legend Evander Holyfield, is boxing for the second time just one month shy of his comeback from heart surgery.

Holyfield Jr made his return to the ring against LaTreveon Grant on July 1 and came back to winning ways with a first-round knockout.

Following a period of inactivity due to having emergency open heart surgery in 2023, Holyfield Jr’s comeback is now well underway.

The 27-year-old is currently gearing up to face Jeremiah Robinson on August 2, in his second post-surgery outing to the ring.

Ahead of his bout at the Fairgrounds Arena in Nashville, Holyfield Jr explained: “I always knew I had heart.

“My heart has been in boxing since I was 12 years old, but now I have a perfect heart, and I feel that is going to take me to the top in boxing.

“I think people who come see me fight on Saturday are going to see me bringing a great deal of mayhem to my opponent.”

With a professional record of 12-1, his only loss came via a brutal knockout from Jurmain McDonald when the two fought in May 2022.

Those close to Holyfield Jr believe he is ready to continue his comeback trail, following a successful recovery from his surgery.

His coach ‘Sugar’ Bert Wells said: “Evan knows how to fight, and a healthy Evan will go all the way if he keeps his focus.”

The Atlanta-born orthodox has returned to follow the path of his father, who is a heavyweight legend and former cruiserweight champion.

Having retired with a professional record of 44-10-2, Holyfield Sr had wins over the likes of Mike Tyson and George Foreman.

While his son is only 13 bouts into his professional career, he certainly has the spirit needed to go far on the professional boxing scene.

Holyfield Jr’s manager, Mike Joyce, payed homage to his father’s legendary career.

He said: “Evan has that Holyfield bloodline which means he is athletic, tough and hard-working.

“His style makes for exciting fights and I believe that is the reason Christy Martin has invited him to appear.”

His upcoming bout will feature on August 2, in an event organised by Christy Martin Promotions.

The Boxing Hall of Fame inductee and now promoter said of the comeback: “Evan Holyfield always puts on a great show for the fans and I’m happy to see him back and healthier than ever.

“He will be facing an opponent who has knocked out every opponent he’s faced, so it will be a dangerous fight for him to be taking so soon into his comeback.”
