I’m a casual gamer. I like to pick up my phone and plays a few rounds here and there when I have some down time. Since it’s usually a case of how much free time I have, I don’t want to fool with a heavy setup process or programming. I just want to plug my phone into the controller and play. This is what interested me about the GameSir X5 Lite. It’s extremely portable because it’s lightweight and it doesn’t get bogged down with advanced controls. It’s just the essential console controller that I was looking for.

About GameSir X5 Lite Type-C Mobile Gaming Controller

The GameSir X5 Lite is a lightweight, wired USB-C mobile controller built for gaming on the go. At approximately 135 grams, it feels nearly weightless in hand yet feels sturdy and well integrated, with laser-etched textured grips providing a secure, ergonomic fit.

It stretches to accommodate devices up to 213 mm in length, including phones like the Pixel 9 Pro XL and the iPad Mini 7, with removable silicone spacer pads ensuring a snug, damage-free fit even with a protective case.

High-quality Hall Effect joysticks deliver drift-proof precision. The face buttons and bumpers use membrane triggers that offer quiet clicks and quick activation which is ideal for casual mobile games, though not suited to titles requiring a long press or analog sensitivity.

Controls include a Home button, Menu and View buttons, plus an “M” button offering Turbo mode, quick face-button swaps, and volume adjustment via button combos – all accessible in the GameSir app (Android only) or on device.

Power passthrough via the USB-C port enables charging while gaming, enabling longer sessions with no battery worries.

Dedicated GameHub software complements the hardware by offering cloud and PC game streaming, controller setup, chat, and a curated game library on Android and iOS devices.

Available in stealth black or wasabi green, the X5 Lite is retail priced around $34.99 USD (approximately £35), making it one of the most affordable plug-and-play mobile gamepads on the market.

    User Experience

The GameSir X5 Lite comes in the standard GameSir retail box. There is an image on the front of the controller with the main details highlighted along side it. The Android icon on the front left hand corner indicates that this controller is only compatible with Android. This is not exactly accurate. Out of the box, you can use it with an Android device, but GameSir built in different modes into the controller. So, you can switch to ‘Switch’ mode to be able to use an iOS device, which is what I did.

I pulled the cushions off the wired end of the controller and plugged my phone in. I did this because I didn’t want to take the case off my phone. I have the iPhone 16 Pro and it fit perfectly inside the grips of the X5 Lite. A few extra cushions are included in case you want to use a different device.

I noticed that there are no pro-level buttons on the controller. Meaning, there are no back paddles. So, if you are looking for that, this isn’t the controller for you. GameSir does have the G8 Plus, which includes two back paddle buttons.

I really like the feel of the X5 Lite in my hands. It’s a little smaller than some other mobile gaming controllers or gamepads, but it is just as responsive and has all the right features for a controller experience. I love the feel of the buttons. They don’t have a mechanical click, but there is a definite bump when you press the button down. The D-pad is also very tactile feeling. I was able to sense each of the directional button presses very well. The thumb sticks are firm, but not stiff. I didn’t notice having any drift problems with them.

For testing purposes, I played two different games — Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Star Wars Hunters. With Sonic, it’s a basic game that was designed for a first generation controller (a/b buttons and a D-pad). Even though the game doesn’t require advanced controls, it does need something responsive because of its fast pace. The X5 Lite did a great job of taking me through a few levels while I tested it. I didn’t notice any issues with controls at all.

Star Wars Hunters is a first-person shooter/fighting game with controls similar to Call of Duty: Mobile. It uses both thumb sticks for direction and camera movement, action buttons for weapon control, and bumper and trigger buttons for extra actions in the game. Although the gameplay doesn’t demand advanced, pro-level controller responsiveness, it makes good use of all inputs, and the controller response is very smooth.

Overall, I really like this controller. I hate to call it ‘basic’ because it’s anything but that. It does, however, fill the ‘essential’ needs category when it comes to a mobile controller. There is an app available if you want customization, but if you don’t it stays out of the way.

    Conclusion

The GameSir X5 Lite is a solid choice for casual mobile gamers who want a straightforward, no-fuss controller. While it lacks advanced features like back paddles, that’s part of what makes it approachable. You don’t need to tinker with settings or customize controls before jumping into a game. Just plug it in and play. If you’re looking for an affordable, well-built controller that covers the basics without adding complexity, the X5 Lite fits the bill.
