A Richmond man who disappeared in the Russian River after jumping off a rope swing was one of two East Bay men who died over the weekend in apparent drownings.

    • Nelshon Hamilton, 34, of Richmond, was reported missing around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 26. His companions said he didn’t resurface after jumping into the Russian River from a rope tied to the Hacienda Bridge, about 5 miles upstream from Guerneville. His body was found around 11:20 a.m. Sunday by divers, the Sonoma County sheriff’s office said.

    His brother told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that Hamilton had been on a weekend trip with his girlfriend to celebrate what would have been his 35th birthday, on Sunday.

    It was the third drowning this month in the Russian River. The two others were on July 13: Elan Miranda, 17, of Oakland, and Pranav Narain, 31, of San Francisco, both fell off floats. Miranda was near Monte Rio and Narain near Forestville.

    • Luis Cornejo-Paz, 29, of Concord, was reported missing around 1:20 p.m. Saturday in Shasta Lake, the Shasta County sheriff’s office said. He had reportedly been towing an inflatable kayak that had two riders about 30 feet offshore, near  Hirz Bay, when he began struggling and went under the water.  Witnesses could not find him in the murky water and made an emergency call.

    Around 4 p.m., Cornejo-Paz’s body was recovered by divers in about 11 feet of water.

    The two people on the kayak made it to shore safely.
