Shannon Sharpe has issued a strong warning following Deion Sanders’ cancer battle.
The NFL legend spoke about Sanders’ health news after the Colorado Buffaloes head coach revealed he had surgery to remove his bladder following a cancer diagnosis.
Deion Sanders spoke about his health during a press conference on Monday, where his doctor also confirmed he is “cured from the cancer.”
The tumour was “high grade”, leading to a “high-risk non-muscle bladder invasive cancer,” his doctor Janet Kukreja told media.
“I am pleased to report that the results from the surgery are that he is cured from the cancer,” she said.
Sharpe, on his podcast Nightcap, sent his best wishes to Sanders before sharing his own battle with cancer and the importance of getting tested early.
“Coach Prime [Sanders], you know everybody here at Nightcap is sending out thoughts and prayers to you and are glad you are feeling better,” he said.
“Prostate cancer is one of the more curable cancers if detected early, that’s why early screening is very important, especially if it runs in your family, so please go get tested.
“My father died of cancer, and two of his brothers died of cancer.
“So I didn’t wait till the age of 40 to get tested; I started getting tested at 33.
“And then they were able to detect it [cancer] and I ended up getting a colonoscopy.
“I got diagnosed in 2016 and got treated in 2017, and I’ve been cancer-free ever since.”

Earlier this year, he spoke at length about his family’s long history with cancer and the impact of his father’s early death.
“I got diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2016, Ocho,” said Sharpe.
“I was going to take the job at Fox; it was my time but I started getting checked in my 30s because of my family history. Like I said, my dad died at 39, two of my dad’s brothers barely made the age of 50. One died in his 40s and one died in his late 40s, maybe 51… so I started getting checked.
“But yeah, but it’s a very curable when when you get screened. Talk to your doctor and you can get screened early. Because a lot of times we, especially Black men [don’t do that].”
It’s a message Sanders also echoed at this week.
“Please get yourself checked out; especially African-American men. Get checked out because this could have been a whole other gathering if I hadn’t,” he added.
When asked if he thought his diagnosis would end his coaching career, Sanders emphatically ruled out that possibility.
“I always knew I was going to coach again,” he said. “It was never in my spirit, in my heart that God wouldn’t allow me to coach again. [I] never thought like that” Sanders remarked.
However, the Buffs coach said the surgery was a “whole life change” and he was still coming to terms with his new life.
“I truly depend on Depend; I cannot control my bladder,” he said referring to a brand of the adult diapers.
Sanders also sat down with NFL legend and real life friend Michael Irvin, who broke down in tears during the conversation to discuss his recent battle.
