GTA 6 could get a 60FPS mode, but theres a catch

GTA 6 could be getting a 60FPS mode, but with a catch: it would be for only one console. If it’s true, that is...

Previously, analysts, commentators, fans and just about everyone had pinned Grand Theft Auto 6 as a 30FPS experience.

This was for good reason, as both Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 show GTA 6 running at 30FPS. Case closed, right?

Well, that’s not quite so, if YouTuber and leaker Detective Seeds is to be believed.

Previously, they have been on the money with when Doom: The Dark Ages previews came out and the Oblivion remaster being shadowdropped, but you know what they say about broken clocks...

If Detective Seeds is correct, they have said that: "GTA6 has been, and continues to hit 60fps while being [optimised] for the PS5 Pro on multiple graphical settings.

"PS engineers are assisting with the [optimisation] due to the new tech being implemented and rolled out with a current target date of May 2026."

Anyone could come out and just say this, but we do actually have proof of GTA 6 running at 60FPS, and it can be found on the Rockstar website.

Alongside Trailer 2, Rockstar dropped a handful of short social media clips that run at 60FPS.

The general assumption was that these had been captured from a developer build running on a PC, and that is probably still the case, given how sharp the image is.

But, if GTA 6 were to run at 60FPS on the PS5 Pro, it would potentially be made possible by Sony’s own brand of machine-assisted image upscaler, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which is only set to improve with Sony’s and AMD’s continued partnership, dubbed Project Amethyst, which will see cross-pollination of tech, such as AMD's better upscaler FSR4 being integrated into PSSR sometime in 2026.

With Sony boots said to be on the ground at Rockstar, it would no doubt be a top-notch deployment of the tech.

But, there is a huge processor elephant in the room, that being that it is up for debate whether or not the PS5 Pro’s CPU is up to the task.

GTA games always go extremely hard on simulation. The trailers showcase just how many cars and pedestrians are going to be on-screen at any given time, and these will all have their own physics simulations, with AI dictating where they should go, if they should react to events happening in-game and so on.

Typically, this kind of work is handled by the CPU, and unlike the GPU, the PS5 Pro’s CPU is not that big of an upgrade from the base model.

In our opinion, unless Rockstar offloads these tasks to the GPU, be it by some usage of asynchronous compute or some other very smart way of doing it, it just doesn’t seem that likely GTA 6 will run at 60FPS on the PS5 Pro.

Sony will no doubt want GTA 6 to run best on its own platform, as GTA 6 is likely going to be a console seller, given just how hyped up it is.

But if it does want that performance edge, 40FPS is a much more realistic target. The likelihood of players who have a PS5 Pro also owning a display capable of 120Hz with variable refresh support is high, and so 40FPS makes a great deal of sense and is more within the realm of possibility.

But what do you think? Wishful thinking or solid proof? Only time will tell.
