It’s been more than forty years since Men At Workarrived on the job with their first big hit, “Who Can It Be Now?” Written by lead vocalist and guitarist Colin Hay about living in a rough part of Victoria, the song was the Australian rock band’s breakthrough in both their native country and the United States, where it reached No. 1 in 1982.
For those who attended Men At Work’s set at the Great South Bay Music Festival on July 27, it was as if not a single day had passed since then. Dressed in a white suit, the 72-year-old Colin Hay performed the song in a way that left fans shocked by how good it was.
A concertgoer uploaded the performance to TikTok, and one fan commented how Hay was “still singing in the original key. Amazing!” “Awesome!!! They still sound great!! Love it,” added another. “He sounds awesome!!! Truly one of the most iconic bands of the 80s,” commented another.

Club in 2015. “I was living in a place called St. Kilda, which is a great part of Melbourne,” he said. “It’s as close to a red-light district as you could get in Melbourne at that time…I was in an apartment, and there were lot of police sirens and drug dealers. It was a fantastic place to live.”
Hay’s next-door neighbors were drug dealers, and he said, “Often, mistakes were made, and people would knock on our door looking for some kind of stimulant, and we didn’t have it.” Every time he heard a knock, Hay said he was “never sure I wanted to open the door.”

Men At Work released “Who Can It Be Now?” in May 1981. It reached No. 2 on the Australian singles chart. The success prompted Columbia to release it as a single in the U.S., and though it was already a year old, it hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 1982.
They would replicate the success with the next single, “Down Under”; it went to No. 1 in 1983, the same year they’d win the Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
Since 2019, Colin Hay has been the only original member of Men At Work, performing with a touring band.
