11 Years Ago, Tom Petty Hit a Milestone No One Saw Coming

It’s tough to wrap your head around the fact that Tom Petty died nearly eight years ago. His songs bridged generations, and they’re bound to keep doing that for many more to come.

But what’s most surprising about the iconic rocker’s four-decade run is that he and the Heartbreakers didn’t score a No. 1 album until 2014. After many hits and close calls, their very first trip to the top of the charts happened just 11 years ago today.

On July 28, 2014, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their 13th studio album, Hypnotic Eye, through Reprise Records in the UK (with the US release following on July 29). Fans went wild, picking up 131,000 copies that first week and sending it straight to No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

For a band that had been cranking out classics like “Refugee” and “Learning to Fly” since the late ’70s, that long-awaited No. 1 was a full-circle moment.

The record had that raw, bluesy punch Petty was known for, with tracks like “American Dream Plan B” and “Fault Lines” taking aim at modern-day struggles while still sounding like the Heartbreakers.

Critics liked it too. Hypnotic Eye earned solid reviews across the board, with a Metacritic score of 77. Tragically, Petty died on October 2, 2017, at 66, of an accidental overdose, just one week after finishing the band’s 40th anniversary tour.

Recently, “Square One” from Tom Petty’s third solo album was featured on The Bear, proving just how timeless his sound still is. You can catch it here:

Moments like this one remind us just how much his music still means, and why it’s not going anywhere.
