ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The annual Roc the Peace Festival kicked off on Saturday at Jones Square Park, promoting peace in the Rochester community and throughout upstate New York.
The festival was free to the public and featured live entertainment. Sirena Cotton, president of Roc the Peace, started the organization in memory of her son, who was murdered several years ago. The event celebrates his life.
“And so we don’t want to wait till people are hit by gun violence. We all can do our part in every big or small way to advocate for gun violence, whether you’re sharing a message of hope or love, or giving mentoring, or sharing a hug or a hello to somebody that goes a long way,” Cotton said. “People are dealing with a lot of mental health issues, homelessness, so all types of things cause us to be a part of violence.”
The festival also included bounce houses for kids, free food and drinks for families, and a gospel hour.
