Israel announces ‘tactical pause’ to fighting in parts of Gaza

Israel has announced a “tactical pause in military activity” in parts of Gaza in order for aid to be delivered.

The Israeli military said secure routes would also be in place to allow aid to enter Gaza safely, as it faces growing pressure from Western governments over reports of mass starvation.

The pause began at 10am (7am UK time) on Sunday and is due to end at 8pm (5pm UK time), and will reoccur every day in three areas.

Recognising Palestine statehood should be done to ‘galvanise change’

Recognising Palestinian statehood should be done to “galvanise change”, a UK minister has said.

Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury James Murray told Sky News: “As a Government, we’re committed to the recognition of Palestine, but we need to work with international partners and we need to use that moment to galvanise change.

“It needs to be part of a pathway to peace.”

He added: “140 countries have already recognised Palestine. The suffering is still continuing.”

‘Real limits’ to airdrops of aid into Gaza, UK minister says

Airdrops of aid into Gaza come with “real limits and drawbacks”, a minister has admitted after a UN chief criticised their use to deliver humanitarian aid.

Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury James Murray told Sky News’ Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips show: “I absolutely accept and recognise that there are real limits and drawbacks with airdrops when it comes to aid, but I also think that until the restrictions are lifted, until aid is able to get in at the scale and quantity that is needed, we need to be doing everything we possibly can to help.

“And that’s why we’re working with the Jordanian authorities to get aid in through airdrops… This is desperate and urgent.”

Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), previously said airdrops “will not reverse the deepening starvation”.

“They are expensive, inefficient and can even kill starving civilians,” he said. “It is a distraction and screensmoke.”

He added: “A manmade hunger can only be addressed by political will. Lift the siege, open the gates and guarantee safe movements and dignified access to people in need.

“Driving aid through is much easier, more effective, faster, cheaper and safer. It’s more dignified for the people of Gaza.”

Remains to be seen whether Israeli promises will avoid mass starvation in Gaza – UK minister

A UK minister has said it remains to be seen whether Israeli promises to establish humanitarian corridors in Gaza will help with starvation and suffering in the territory.

Asked whether he thought Israel’s announcement would help people get food, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury told Sky News’ Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips show: “Well, let’s see. Let’s see what happens with that.

“But as I said, what we are not going to lose sight of is the importance of lifting restrictions on aid getting in so that it can get in at the quantity that is needed to make sure that we can move things forward.

“And that’s part of having a ceasefire, hostages released and bringing this to an end.”

Israel begins ‘tactical pause’ in parts of Gaza

Good morning and welcome to our live blog.

The Israeli military has announced a “tactical pause in military activity” in parts of Gaza for humanitarian reasons, following pressure from the international community to avoid mass starvation.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that “a local tactical pause in military activity will take place for humanitarian purposes from 10:00 to 20:00 (07:00-17:00 GMT), starting today (Sunday)”.

It said the pause will begin “in the areas where the IDF is not operating: al-Mawasi, Deir al-Balah, and Gaza City, every day until further notice”.

“This decision was co-ordinated with the UN and international organisations following discussions regarding the matter,” it added.

“In addition, designated secure routes will be in place permanently from 06:00 to 23:00 to enable the safe passage of UN and humanitarian aid organisation convoys delivering and distributing food and medicine to the population across the Gaza Strip.”

The IDF said it “will continue to support humanitarian efforts alongside ongoing manoeuvring and offensive operations against terrorist organisations in the Gaza Strip, in order to protect Israeli civilians”.

It said it is prepared to expand the scale of this activity as needed.
