Churchie Swim Club In Australia To Close After More Than 100 Years Of Existence

A prominent Australian swim club is closing for good.

The Churchie Swim Club, which has been affiliated with the Anglican Church Grammar School in East Brisbane, said in an email to members that it is shutting down beginning in the 2025-26 season, according to Coorparoo News.

Operations of the club will be formally taken over by Rackley Swimming, a club with multiple locations throughout Queensland.

The announcement from Churchie Swim Club comes on the heels of legal action taken against the club by former head coach Richard Sleight, who was let go in December.

Sleight and assistant Liam Smith were dismissed after spending just over a year with the club.

On Jan. 9, Sleight filed an unfair dismissal claim with the Fair Work Commission (the workplace tribunal of the Australian government) against Anglican Church Grammar School, seeking a full payout of his five-year contract initially set to expire in September 2028.

In April, Sleight was named the new head coach at Melbourne Vicentre.

Sleight’s dismissal resulted in the club’s committee and national and state squads leaving the club. Various swimmers came out in support of Sleight, including the mother of Thomas Pattison, a member of Australia’s 2024 Junior Pan Pacific roster.

“You should be ashamed of yourselves, knowing you’ve ruined such a beautiful thing and jeopardized the futures of swimmers with such high potential,” Gabrielle Pattison wrote, adding that the addition of Sleight was “exactly what the club needed” after former coach Ben Allen was charged with sexual assault in 2022.

Churchie appointed former World Record holder and international for Great Britain and New Zealand Zoe Baker as its new head coach, but according to Coorparoo News, she has resigned and will leave her post this month.

Churchie has a swimming history dating back to 1918, shortly after the school moved to East Brisbane.

The club won 21 premierships in the Athletic Association of the Great Public Schools.
