Training camp is hugely important for all teams around the NFL, but this year it is especially so for the Cleveland Browns.
Entering their preparations for the 2025 NFL season, the Browns have yet to determine who will be their starting quarterback with four very different players currently on the roster.
Had Deshaun Watson been available to play, this quarterback battle probably wouldn’t even exist.
However, the $230 million star will be sidelined for the majority, if not all, of the 2025 campaign as he continues to rehabilitate from an Achilles injury.
As a result, one of the veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, or rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders will see their name listed as the starting quarterback for Week 1.
With training camp now having gotten underway for the entire team, Sanders – who has dominated the headlines since he was selected by the Browns in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft – has been a key name to watch.
Sanders issued stern warning by Browns GM
The 23-year-old, whose father is NFL legend and Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, has been subject to scrutiny from day one, years before his dream of following in his father’s footsteps and reaching the NFL was even realized.
He drew negative attention after being pulled over twice for speeding in two weeks in June.
Browns general manager Andrew Berry addressed this in his media availability at training camp on Thursday, sending his rookie a stern message.
“Not smart, just not smart, and it’s something that we’ve addressed with him,” Berry said.
“He understands the implications, he understands the consequences. I think the thing is it’s not just about yourself.
“It’s not just about having a joy ride. It’s not just about driving a car really fast, but it’s about the fact that you can endanger other people.
Sanders was done twice for speeding in JuneGetty Much of the media attention has been centered around Flacco and Sanders battling it out to be QB1Getty“It’s about the fact that if a deer or someone cuts out in front of you, like your reaction time.
“It’s just dangerous and it’s not something that we want our guys to be doing. It’s not something that they should be doing. And the No. 1 reason is because we don’t want some type of catastrophic accident.
“We saw that two years ago when, what was it, Dallas or Houston with a player, and in that incident everybody was lucky to walk away. We don’t want that occurring with anyone in our organization.”
Although Sanders hasn’t addressed his speeding tickets to members of the media at training camp, he did release a video on social media accepting responsibility for his actions.
“I’ve made some wrong choices, personally, I can own up to them,” Sanders said in June. “I’ve made some not great choices. I learn from it.”
Browns QB battle heating up
Entering training camp, Sanders is considered fourth on the quarterback depth-chart, with fellow rookie Gabriel having begun to impress those in and around the Browns organization due to his ability to absorb information well – and quickly – and make advanced reads and timely plays.
If Sanders wants a shot at taking to an NFL field, then he needs to not only impress, but outperform the other three players in the quarterback room, or risk getting cut from the team entirely when the 53-man roster is finalized.
Whilst Canadian Football League team Toronto Argonauts exclusively hold his rights, it is expected that should things not work out as planned in Cleveland, Sanders will likely find another home in the NFL before making the switch to the CFL.
However, the former Colorado Buffaloes standout has made his intentions clear: to enter training camp in his best physical condition, having been posting various videos on social media depicting late-night workouts and running sessions, as well as being spotted working with a dedicated quarterback coach.
But, it will be an uphill battle to compete with veterans, especially Flacco as the 18-year pro also has the added experience of playing in Cleveland under Kevin Stefanski before.
In 2023, he became the Browns’ savior, leading them to the playoffs after he took the starting job from Watson after he went down with injury.
As such, ‘Flacco Fever’ was the talk of the town among the Browns faithful, that was until he left in free agency for the Indianapolis Colts.
Nonetheless, he has returned back to his familiar AFC North roots, having been named Super Bowl XLVII MVP when he led Cleveland’s division rivals Baltimore Ravens to a 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
The 40-year-old has already come out and boldly stated that he is there to ‘play football’, and not just serve as a mentor to Sanders and Gabriel, but whether either one of the rookies can outplay the hugely experienced veteran, though, remains to be seen.
